Botulinum Toxin (“Botox”) Injections
Commonly known as ‘botox’ (there are other approved brands available) or anti-wrinkle injections. It is the most commonly requested aesthetic treatment. It is a prescription only medicine that is injected in tiny amounts just under the skin into facial muscles using a very tiny needle. Once in the muscle, the medicine blocks the nerve impulse that is responsible for making the muscle contract. This keeps the muscle in a relaxed state and also the wrinkles that occur when the muscle contracts. The result is a huge reduction of the wrinkles in this area, and the face looks more refreshed, less tired and youthful.
What are the side effects ?
Botulinum toxin has been used for medical and cosmetic purposes for many years. Like all medicines, ‘botox’ can cause side effects but these are generally minimal and temporary such as headaches, swelling, irritation and redness. Less common side effects include an effect on nearby muscles unintentionally such as ‘heavy brow’. It’s important to book for a consultation with the nurse practitioner prior to treatment so they can go through your medical history as not everyone is suitable and this can be discussed including the side effects, risks, benefits and alternatives. The nurse practitioner will also discuss aftercare and give written information on the treatment for the patient to consider prior to booking.
How long does it last?
It can take up to a couple of weeks to reach its full working potential and everyone metabolises the drug differently but generally results normally last approximately 3 to 4 months.
Which areas can be treated?
The three most commonly treated areas are as follows;
Frown Lines (glabellar lines)
Lines at the top of the nose between the brows caused by constant frowning, can be become quite deep and ingrained. Applying ‘botox’ injections here can significantly reduce these lines but also help to raise the brows a little, giving a more awake refreshed appearance.
Crow’s Feet (lateral canthus)
Lines at the sides of the eyes can become prominent and look ageing. With treatment, these lines can look smoother and help to open up the eyes a little giving a more youthful appearance.
Forehead Lines (Frontalis lines)
These expression lines across the forehead can become extensive making us look aged. By relaxing this expression using ‘botox’ injections, the lines become softer and the face has a more refreshed appearance.
